We trace our origins to the opening of our first supermarket in 1960 in the city of Temuco. In the mid-1970s, we expanded our business by opening the first Jumbo hypermarket in Chile, with a selling space of 7,000 square meters, located on Kennedy Avenue in Santiago.

In 1982, we began our operations in Argentina with the opening of Argentina’s first Jumbo hypermarket, which had a selling space of 9,282 square meters. Currently, we operate through the brands Jumbo, Vea, and Disco.

We expanded our footprint in the Brazilian market through the acquisition of three main supermarket chains. In 2007, we acquired the GBarbosa supermarket chain, which operated in the northeast region. Later in 2010, we achieved what we estimated to be the largest supermarket chain in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, Bretas, which consolidated our position as Brazil’s fourth-largest supermarket operator in terms of revenues, as measured by ABRAS. In January 2012, we acquired Prezunic, estimated to be the third-largest supermarket chain in Rio de Janeiro.

In December 2007, we agreed to acquire GSW S.A., the operator of Wong supermarkets, hypermarkets, and shopping centers in Peru. Nowadays, we operate through the brands' Wong and Metro.

In 2012, Cencosud entered the Colombian supermarket industry thru the acquisition of Carrefour. Today, Cencosud runs under the brands Jumbo and Metro.
